95+ points – Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Bright & vibrant on the nose with candied red fruit notes. Highlighting raspberry, cranberry, rose hip and violet with hints of rhubarb fennel and vanilla lingering.
A nice palate weight due to the 100% whole bunch and 50% new French oak, there is an elegant acidity that washes over the palate and balanced by its progressive tannins. This wine is expressive of the Cooinda Vale site & single clonal choice of Pommard offers pure fruit character and keeps the freshness through the long & silky finish.
This wine is enjoyable in its youth; however due to its balance and structure, it will benefit from 10-20 years in the cellar.
A little background on the journey toward the ‘ORONSAY’ …
When the Pooley family decided to uproot from Wimbledon, UK in search of broader horizons it was done at the flip of a coin, Australia or Canada!
With decision made, Denis, Margaret and children – Sheila, Patricia, John and Diana boarded the RMS Oronsay and set sail for Tasmania, Australia.
The sense of adventure, forging into the unknown and looking for greener pastures was the philosophy used to create this wine. Crafted from select parcels of fruit that Anna Pooley deemed the most suitable to with-stain 100% whole bunch fermentation – in search of a Pinot Noir with gusto that carries the elegance of Cooinda Vale!
Whole bunch fermentation allows for a fresh and vibrant fruit character whilst adding an extra layer of complexity via the additional tannin that is extracted from the stems of the bunches, it also balances acid by extracting potassium from the stems that combines with tartaric acid in the wine to soften the overall feel of the wine.
