Pooley Coal River Pinot Noir is the main line of our wine production. It is made from our 20 plus year old vines from our Campania Vineyard on the banks of the Coal River. Being estate grown it reflects the unique terroir of the site and the corresponding season. With which comes the challenges to grow and produce the best quality Pinot Noir.
The wine has varietal characteristics of cherries and plums, with good complexity and with firm, balanced tannins.
Winemaking Notes
This wine was fermented dry in small fermenting tanks, hand-plunged daily, left on skins for about a week, pressed out and then matured in 10% new and 90% old French oak barriques for eight months before bottling.
| Colour | medium intensity burgandy red |
|---|---|
| Nose | bright and perfumed with notes of cherry flesh mulberry leaf and violets |
| Palate | Primary fruit flavours dominate the front of the palate with subtle regional acidity giving the palate finesse and focus |
| The Grape | The grapes are estate-grown from our cool climate vineyard in the Coal River Valley of southern Tasmania. Special care is taken to develop and maximize the potential of the fruit for its quality requirements. Emphasis is placed on quality rather than quantity. A balanced vine produces finer quality fruit. The fruit is harvested by hand in mid-April when the fruit flavours and acids are balanced. |
| Alc/vol | 13.7% |
| Cellaring | The firmer, fleshier and more persistent tannins give this style of Pinot greater ageing potential. Still young and in need of more time in the bottle. The wine should be cellared for three to five years. |
