Description

Pooley Coal River Pinot Noir is the main line of our wine production. It is made from our 20 plus year old vines from our Campania Vineyard on the banks of the Coal River. Being estate grown it reflects the unique terroir of the site and the corresponding season. With which comes the challenges to grow and produce the best quality Pinot Noir.

The wine has varietal characteristics of cherries and plums, with good complexity and with firm, balanced tannins.

Winemaking Notes

This wine was fermented dry in small fermenting tanks, hand-plunged daily, left on skins for about a week, pressed out and then matured in 10% new and 90% old French oak barriques for eight months before bottling.

Awards

  • Bronze Medal – Tasmanian Wine Show 2011
  • Top Gold and the Les and Diana Harmer Pepetual Trophy for Best Australian Dry Red Wine Pinot Noir 2010 and older – Rutherglen Wine Show 2011

Wine Characteristics

Colour Lightly coloured (cherry red).
Nose Fresh cherry and strawberry.
Palate Ripe fruit and chocolate on the palate. Soft tannins, good length and mouth feel, a nicely balanced wine.
The Grape The grapes are estate-grown from our cool climate vineyard in the Coal River Valley of southern Tasmania. Special care is taken to develop and maximize the potential of the fruit for its quality requirements. Emphasis is placed on quality rather than quantity. A balanced vine produces finer quality fruit. The fruit is harvested by hand in mid-April when the fruit flavours and acids are balanced.
Alc/vol 13.7%
Cellaring The firmer, fleshier and more persistent tannins give this style of Pinot greater ageing potential. Still young and in need of more time in the bottle. The wine should be cellared for three to five years.
Serve With Pork, red meats and game.
