Sourced from a very small block of Syrah planted at Cooinda Vale Estate & named after the second generation Pooley & current managing director John Roy Denis Pooley – ‘JRD’
Bright purple rim and hue. Soy, shitake, truffle, earthy, violet and boysenberry. Rich and silky mouthfeel, cool fruits, pepper berry, rose, blood orange and cardamom. Rhubarb crumble, chalky acid and graphite tannin.
Even though this wine is enjoyable while young it will keep developing for 10+ years.
A little background on the journey toward the ‘JRD’ …
It is little known that in 1999 Margaret Pooley sat on the back verandah at the Cooinda Vale property with grandson Matt drinking cups of tea and propagating cuttings. They talked about climate change and where it would lead Tasmania’s Wine future. That same spring Matt planted a small ‘trial’ block of Syrah. Four rows of this varietal that had minimal history or plantings in Tasmania, later expanded to eight rows which is enough to make 2-3 barrels depending on the vintage.
In its infancy the wine was blended away into the Cabernet Merlot, then from 2005 onward it was decided to sell the fruit. In 2010 the fruit from this block made its way into the Glaetzer-Dixon Mon Père – a wine that took home one of the most prestigious awards in Australia – the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2011 at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show. When Anna Pooley started making the wines she had discussions with Matt in order to create the secret 2015 Vintage.
JOHN ROY DENIS POOLEY
Born in London in 1943 to parents Margaret & Denis, John Roy Denis Pooley began an amazing journey to where he stands today.
In 1952 John, his 3 sisters and parents migrated to Australia, guided by a flip of the coin – tails securing the Pooley’s to Australia and not the alternative of Canada.
Since arriving in 1953, John has lived a life full to the brim.
A life full of passion – Family, Business, Porsche Motor Vehicles, Motor Racing and of course Wine. John completed his automotive apprenticeship in 1965, he and his father Denis then opened a mechanics workshop and car yard. This turned into Performance Automobiles and was the first Porsche Dealership in the state along with Mercedes, Subaru and Volkswagen. Whilst John was in the automotive game he filled his spare time with motor racing, he competed in many Targa Events, both road and off-road rally’s and was the state rally champion in 1973 in the first Subaru to be rallied in Australia. He also enjoyed open wheeler tack racing and after many years has recently retired from amateur racing. John ran the dealership until he sold it in 2009 to focus on the wine business for the next generations of the Pooley family.
In more recent times John and Libby purchased the historic Prospect House and has refurbished the property into a 12 room private hotel and restaurant. The idea behind this was to be able to offer the complete circle where our valued Wine Club members would be able to enjoy the cellar door experience, stay the evening and dine with fantastic local produce.
To celebrate John’s journey, his commitment to excellence, growing the family wine business and his passion we proudly announce the ‘JRD’ Syrah – a single vineyard wine from the Cooinda Vale property.
