$150

Coal River Valley

A symphonic display of perfume and florals with deeply enriching notes of violets, rosemary, aniseed, cedar and stewed strawberry on the nose. An innate tone of earth, port royal tobacco, fresh leather, and foraged mushrooms follow on the palate. There’s a measured restraint to this wine with a crushed velvet texture, pitch-perfect acidity and endless joy on the finish.

Dry

2020 saw a dry start to the growing season with winter rainfall well below average. Cold and windy conditions during flowering resulted in smaller yields. Early summer saw a continuation of dry conditions, but temperatures moderated significantly coupled with significant rainfall in late February and March freshened up canopies providing an ideal finish to the growing season.

Cooinda Vale Vineyard was established in 1985 by Pooley’s founders, Margaret and Dennis Pooley. Sitting between 80-100m above sea level, the vineyard is tucked away in a nook of hills North of Campania making it much more protected from prevailing weather conditions. Being more continental it also experiences greater extremes in temperatures bringing more frequent frosts, snow and heat waves. The iron lacking grey brown sandy loam over clay subsoils at this site tend to bring a moderate level of struggle to the vines by restricting deep root growth and water accessibility but in turn creates a wine that is more delicate and finer.

Clonal selection of 114 & 115. The fruit was picked at 12.7 baume. 33% whole bunch fermentation (wild) with the balance destemmed for 20 days. Pressed to 33% new French oak barriques (75% Cavin / 25% St. Martin, both medium toast, tight-grained) for 12 months.

Matured in 33% new French barriques. This 33% whole bunch pinot has depth beyond that of its siblings. It’s full-on forest floor, full-on savoury spices, and tannins made to measure, but all bow down to the primacy of the dark berry fruit of the impossibly long finish. World class.
